Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he is from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
