Industry Calls

A major business group last month issued a detailed set of further requests in various industries to assist exporters navigate new bureaucratic hurdles that has hampered the trade of goods.

Its internal research reported that a majority of companies surveyed agreed that the existing agreement was not helping business expansion.

A host of further domains could, realistically, see a parallel method – convergence with internal market standards – in return for lowering post-Brexit barriers across production, in automotive, chemicals, or for example in VAT procedures.

European Response

European capitals were disappointed by the modest aims in last year's reset, specifically the British rejection of suggestions floated by some analysts regarding the virtual readmission of UK products to the single market.

The precise arrangements on energy cooperation and agri-food rules is still to be finalised. A proposal for UK companies to be participate in a €150bn security initiative has hit a snag over the scale of the membership fee, after opposition from the French government. Another nation has signed up to the programme.

Wider Environment

The UK has concluded arrangements to rejoin a university exchange programme and to discuss a young workers initiative. This has facilitated progress for subsequent negotiations.

Analysts close to government note that the issuing of a key US strategy document has altered the environment on UK relations with Europe.

The paper said that the US would "cultivate resistance" to the EU's present path and commended the "rising power" of nationalist groups.

Within the administration, there is a growing awareness that the rapidly changing world has evolved further.

Political Considerations

On the national stage, the leadership also foresees being outflanked on Brexit by one opposition party, but also a further party, which is targeting its traditional heartlands in May's elections.
