The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
