Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
