No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
