New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to support the former governor in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this election is,” the mayor remarked.

Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
