New Year Revelers Urged to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK
Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the weather service.
Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.
Readings Forecast to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Warnings Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
