Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
