Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
