Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A new acronym came to light several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
