Arteta Fears Fitness Crisis Could Hinder Arsenal's Trophy Quest
Arsenal's manager has expressed concern that his squad's pursuit for titles this campaign is being jeopardized by a concerning cycle of injuries and a grueling schedule.
Latest Squad Update
Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the Champions League trip to face Club Brugge due to illness. In addition, forward Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba are still unavailable.
There was, on a brighter note, positive news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker added to their European squad. He comes in for the injured youngster Max Dowman, who picked up an foot injury.
"Practice, no because we lack time to train. But obviously the fact that you are missing players, you are loading other players more, there's a consequence to that and it's a truly vicious circle."
Dowman's setback is the most recent in a long series of fitness problems for the club. Since the start of last season, they have recorded 95 player absences, the second-most total in the Premier League.
Long-Term Absences
- Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are unlikely to be back until the new year.
- Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to recover from surgery and "needs more time," according to the boss.
Arteta rejected the idea that training intensity were to culprit, citing a shortage of opportunity for drills. He emphasized the pressure on available players, some of whom have featured over 150 matches in two seasons.
Recruitment Plans
Despite a significant off-season investment exceeding £250 million, Arteta stated the club is not looking to enter the January recruitment market.
"At the moment we're just focusing on bringing the players back and with luck it will be a matter of weeks," he said. "We know how crucial those weeks are going to be."
Next Challenge
The team suffered their first defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their lead at the summit of the Premier League to two clear points.
Focus now shifts to the European stage, where a sixth consecutive group victory would virtually guarantee a top-eight place. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could create a club record by scoring in a fifth successive Champions League match.
"We are frustrated with the result, but we have to move forward," he said. "It's not like all is going badly because we lost one game. So we remain united."
