Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
